Name and history

It is the only Gasper Township statewide.[4] It was named after John Casper Potterf (or Batdorf) (1758-1836),[5][6] a Pennsylvanian of German descent who became an early and wealthy settler of Preble County. Gasper Township was originally part of Washington Township until Potterf convinced the Board of Commissioners to dissever the twenty-four sections of the southern part of Washington Township.[7] One explanation for the spelling discrepancy is that, despite his name being Casper, the county auditor, in making the record of the name and establishment thereof, by mistake, recorded it Gasper. Alternately, it could just be a case that Potterf was also known as Gasper.

Government

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer,[8] who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.
